Box Office Report: ‘Alice in Wonderland’ comes in first with $62 Million

by Jaimie Mancham-Case on March 15, 2010

The box office results this week were a little shocking. Well, shocking to some people, that is because Robert Pattinson, considered by some to be the hottest actor in Hollywood right now, did not have his movie debut in the first position. (This does not surprise me though, read this article to see why).

‘Alice in Wonderland’ took the number 1 spot again this weekend with $62 Million. Tim Burtons whimsical and colorful movie has been garnering great reviews and is a great success for Disney who dolled out a $200 Million budget for the film.

Matt Damon proved his box office draw with his new movie ‘Green Zone’ coming in 2nd place with $14.5 million. The movie has been compared by some to ‘The Bourne Identity’ and most viewers are giving it rave reviews.

‘She’s Out of My League’ gained the 3rd spot this weekend, a spot higher than ‘Remember Me’ which is a big shock. The movie opened with $9.6 Million, which is fairly decent for a movie that looks as bad as it does. I guess the dumb jocks were looking for another hot girl, dumb guy, corny/sleazy jokes movie to get into this weekend.

Robert Pattinson’s ‘Remember Me’ came in 4th place with $8.3 Million, though it did have a higher per screen dollar amount than ‘She’s Out of My League’. I can’t say I am surprised the movie did so badly, it didn’t look that entertaining or compelling and the reviews haven’t been great. I was actually in line to buy a ticket to see the movie and changed my mind as I was going to pay. The released trailers and clips of the movie did nothing to draw me in; if anything they turned me off and it seems as if many Rob Pattinson fans felt the same way. It will be interesting to see how Kristen Stewart’s new movie ‘The Runaways’ does.

‘Shutter Island’ came in 6th place with $8.1 Million. I know people compare the movie’s twist ending with ‘A Beautiful Mind’ and are disappointed. But I find Leonardo Di Caprio’s acting skills and the storyline different enough from ‘A Beautiful Mind’ to differentiate between the two.

‘Our Family Wedding,’ the other new movie of the weekend came in 6th place with $7.6 Million. The movie starring America Ferrera, Carlos Mencia, and Forrest Whittaker is a new adaption/take on ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’ and performed relatively well for a film most people have never heard of.
