Robert Pattinson and Emilie de Ravin’s new movie ‘Remember Me’ debuted in 4th place this weekend with $8.3 Million. What is even more shocking than the fact that it came in 4th with under $10 Million is the fact that ‘She’s Out of My League’ opened at number 3 with $9.6 Million.
How could this happen? Robert Pattinson is the hottest male star in the world right now and girls and women do anything they can to see, touch and be near him. However, this fairly dismal opening for ‘Remember Me’ may actually be showing the opposite. Maybe Robert Pattinson isn’t the draw for the fans at all, but his character Edward Cullen.
Robert Pattinson was relatively unknown before ‘Twilight’ though many people fell in love with him as Cedric Diggory in the ‘Harry Potter’ movies. However, once ‘Twilight’ was released people became enamored with him: this loving, sparkling vampire that treated his innocent human love so carefully, tenderly and preciously that many wanted to become Bella Swan themselves.
You see Robert Pattinson’s fans are in love with him because they see him as Edward Cullen. He personifies to them, the man that many fell in love with when reading Stephanie Meyers books. Robert Pattinson has to break out of the spell that many women see him in (some couldn’t bare to see ‘Remember Me’ because they didn’t want to see him sharing loving gazes with anyone other than Bella Swan), and ‘Remember Me’ wasn’t the role to do it in. The character he played, Tyler, did nothing to warm people to him or care about what happened. The movie’s trailers also did nothing to draw in his relatively female and youngish fan base; the movie looked dull, depressing and heavy.
So then the question is, can Robert Pattinson have a successful career after the ‘Twilight’ series is done? The obvious answer is Robert Pattinson has the world at his feet right now and if he transitions well from Edward to other characters, he should be fine. But if his transition is awkward and bumpy (see his Vagina comments) then he will have a much harder time holding on to his fans.
‘Remember Me’ likely didn’t fare well at the box office because people weren’t excited to see the movie and it didn’t receive good reviews. Though fans love Rob as Edward Cullen, it will be hard for him to use that fan base to cultivate interest in his other films.
