A sold-out crowd of 75,000 took over the desert city of Indio, California for the 11th annual Coachella Music and Arts Festival last night, with most festival attendees stoked for a late-night performance by Jay-Z.
It has been a rough week for Coachella organizers. It looked like it would be total chaos yesterday after some festival acts are stranded in the UK due to a volcano in Iceland. Stranded artists like The Cribs, had to cancel their Friday show. Other bands stranded include: Delphic, Bad Lieutenant, Frightened Rabbit, and Gary Numan.
The Cribs posted a letter on their MySpace page.
“We were told that there was no way we would make it in time for our set tomorrow but we hung around in the car park for a couple of hours anyway … trying desperately to get our flights changed to any that would get us there but to no avail,”.
If the volcano stranding acts wasn’t bad enough, festival attendees had to deal with traffic in the dessert. One concert attendee wrote, “We sat in traffic for 8 hours to go less than 8 miles, only to be turned away because of no parking. There was no traffic control, no crowd control, no organization. This was a disgraceful display of event planning, and whoever is in charge shouldn’t be allowed to organize dinner for two, much less a festival for 80″.
Though the concert is sold out, many hopeful fans still made the trip hoping for the best. Many waved handmade signs at passing cars that read “Please.”
