Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz star in ‘Knight and Day’ a new romantic action comedy directed by James Mangold. While it’s not the finest piece of cinema that I’ve seen either actor in; it is still, light, funny, cute and full of action. While the movie is engaging, it does suffer from being too long- it runs for 1 hour and 50 minutes and there were a couple of times that I almost drifted off.
The basic premise of the movie is that Tom Cruise is a C.I.A secret agent or maybe FBI and he is in possession of an everlasting battery that many people want. He is an agent gone rogue and no-one knows if he is the good guy or the bad guy; well the movie seems to make you want to go back and forth, though I think the answer is truly obvious to anyone with a brain. And so, to that effect, the big surprise at the end is not really a surprise. Cameron Diaz plays a hapless blond who happens to be at the wrong airport at the wrong time and comes into contact with Cruise.
While the plot is highly imaginative, truly unrealistic and a bit silly, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz have an chemistry that helps the movie plod on with sizzle. While I’m not a huge fan of either one of the stars, I’m not a detractor either and was actually excited to see this movie. I don’t quite understand the people who won’t see the movie because of Tom Cruise- but I guess something about him gets some people riled up.
I actually thought that Tom Cruise looked hotter than ever in the movie, especially the beach scene. Though, I’m not sure if that was his real body or a body double because the last time I saw his chest on screen it was pasty and pudgy and this time it was tan and cut. He looked as gorgeous as he did in his ‘Risky Business’ days and only a few lines on his face gave his age away. And as always his signature dark sunglasses were evident through-out the movie. Cameron Diaz was also looking great and had a bubbly effervescence that worked in the movie.
All in all, while ‘Knight and Day’ isn’t going to be a classic, it’s a fun and chill movie to watch this summer.
