‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ loses to ‘Hall Pass’ in recount- George Bush smiles

by Jaimie Mancham-Case on March 1, 2011

The box office had a snafu this weekend. And well, it seems like it’s 2004 again. Yet another recount has not gone the way people had hoped. This time it’s not Gore v. Bush but ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ v ‘Hall Pass’ and the latter has lost again. Unfortunately, for ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ they got a little ticket count happy and overestimated how many people went to see the movie. A bit like how Gore overestimated how many people voted for him in Florida (but then again, I don’t know if voters were told they couldn’t see ‘Gnomeo’ when they showed up at the movie theater).

The NYTimes states that:

Final ticket grosses for the weekend box office showed that “Gnomeo & Juliet,” an animated release from Walt Disney Studios, actually sold $13.4 million in tickets and not the $14.2 million estimated on Sunday. That smaller total dropped the picture to second place in the weekend derby, behind the comedy “Hall Pass,” which had a final tally of $13.5 million.

What a sad weekend for ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’.
